Synopsis

Like many teenagers, there's a lot about Daniel Meadows' life that's out of his control. For example, having to start in a new school district for his freshman year of high school thanks to his dad's new job. Inside the realm of his control, however, is the decision to try a brand-new sport purely to impress a girl. But the day of tennis tryouts proves far more fateful than Dan ever could have imagined, when a failed attempt by Truck-kun and the powers that be to kill him and transport his consciousness to a fantasy realm leaves him on Earth with miraculous abilities instead. Stuck on his boring home planet with magical powers to harness and learn, Dan finds himself in a unique situation. Will he use his powers for greatness? Will he abuse them? Or will he simply use them to become the greatest tennis player ever just to chase the girl of his dreams? Who knows? After all, it’s freshman year and he’s got a long way to go. This slice-of-life tennis LitRPG serves up progression, sports, and fun in one hilarious series.

WTF did I just listen too?

I love the premise of this book - Isekai gets interrupted and the MC stays in the real world but with powers. Queue wacky highjinks! Or maybe high stakes superhero battle! Or maybe a relaxing slice of life story. So many fun directions it could go!! Warning Spoilers in the rest of the review! What does he do with the powers? He plays tennis and is angsty. If you love chapter after chapter of detailed tennis training with homoerotic overtones, this book is for you! If you want something to actually happen, you will be disappointed. Yes the MC gets better at tennis. No, he doesn’t win any big games, doesn’t get with the girl, doesnt get with the female soccer coach, doesn’t get with the older, male, star athlete who is constantly ruffling his hair and pushing a stray strand out of his eyes. I love many LitRPG series so happily ignore gapping plot holes but this one had one that pissed me off every time it came up. MC is a 14 year old boy. His only parent gets deployed with the Navy, leaving him home alone for months on end. How the fuck he gets food, isn’t put into a foster home, or any other aspect of this criminal abandonment goes completely in unaddressed. But don’t worry, the exact knuckle positioning of various tennis grips is explained ad nauseam.

Good Idea, Below Average Execution

A good idea for LitRPG; sport is a natural candidate for stat progression, but the manuscript would have benefitted from a good editor. There were grammar mistakes, incorrectly used words (e.g. you don't score 'points' in soccer, you don't say 'zero zero' in tennis, and please, please, please learn how and when to use 'per se' properly!), and it was generally very clunky and repetitive in places. The narration was OK, but a little jerky and disjointed in places. There were some strange pauses and breaks mid-sentence. It was also too fast; I had to slow the narration down to listen to it comfortably.
