At 19, Bonnie Stanford is your average hardworking urban college student in Alaska—just a typical girl trying to find her place in the world while avoiding her psychotic parents. (Well, typical if you don't count the fact that she doesn't know that she's an un-awakened Vampire Queen.) Having just lost her job, Bonnie reluctantly accepts the request to house sit her parents’ place out in the middle of Nowhere, Alaska, while they go on a three-week vacation. Two days before they are due home (and she can go back to quietly ignoring them), however, Bonnie receives a strange package and a letter, both of which turn her world upside down. Suddenly, she finds herself at the top of the Supernatural Most Wanted List, just because she has to suck blood and can, oh, by the way, enthrall people. Being hunted by the Inquisition and vampire lords who wanna kill her or enslave her, with only an ancient Samurai who is just as wary of her as she is of him as a companion, Bonnie tries to handle the insanity she has just been immersed in. Will the tentative trust formed between the centuries-old warrior and the naïve young woman be enough to help her survive the dangers to come? Will the unlikely pair be able to overcome their fear of each other to survive the coming supernatural apocalypse? Or will Bonnie fall to the supernatural creatures seeking to bind her and use her to make their dark armies?

Having teamed up with Theo, a very old and surprisingly chivalrous vampire lord, Bonnie and her samurai friend Masaaki now have a slightly better chance of surviving the next couple weeks. But trouble calls when one of Theo's old friends gets kidnapped by a rival lord, and he and the samurai leave the untrained queen alone while they rush headlong into a trap. Angry at suddenly being the rich errand girl, Bonnie makes a very unwise decision to go rescue a barghest from local slavers—the same barghest that both of her guardians repeatedly warned her not to save because barghests eat vampires. But she is inexplicably drawn to the huge beast called Björn, even as he makes her tremble in fear. Now, while Theo is missing in action, and Masaaki is wandering lost in the Alaskan wilderness, Bonnie alone must find a way to keep the barghest from eating everyone who pisses him off while simultaneously staying out of the hands of the Inquisition.

After narrowly escaping the Duke of the Nightlands (and leaving Theo at his mercy), Bonnie and the feylord (Tl'oghk'etnaeyen) find themselves reunited with Björn. Barely surviving a run-in with a Fury, Bonnie finally learns to compromise and communicate as they continue their search for Masaaki. In the process, Björn finds out the past may not be quite as he remembers it; Bonnie and Tl'oghk'etnaeyen forge a deeper trust and understanding of each other; and Theo ends up in an uneasy alliance with a brainwashed Inquisitor. But even as new, fragile partnerships are formed, a malignant demigod is getting closer to seeing his evil plans come to fruition.
