This Isn’t Dungeon Crawler Carl
If you’ve been putting off Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon because you’ve heard it’s just another version of Dungeon Crawler Carl, I think that comparison does this book a disservice.
Yes, they share Dinniman’s dark humour, creative worldbuilding, RPG mechanics, and moments of absurdity, but that’s where the similarities largely end.
Dungeon Crawler Carl is ultimately an adventure. It’s brutal, hilarious, and emotional, but underneath it all there’s always hope, friendship, and the feeling that the characters are pushing back against impossible odds.
Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon is something else entirely.
This book explores trauma, suffering, identity, morality, revenge, addiction, and the frightening ways people adapt to prolonged abuse. It asks uncomfortable questions about what makes someone human when they’re subjected to relentless psychological and physical torment. The horror isn’t there simply for shock value. It’s used to examine resilience, desensitisation, empathy, and the cost of survival.
The violence is genuinely confronting, but unlike many horror novels it rarely feels gratuitous. Almost every horrific scene serves a purpose in demonstrating how the world changes its characters, forcing both them and the reader to confront increasingly difficult ethical dilemmas.
I also appreciated that the story doesn’t offer easy answers. Characters make terrible decisions, sometimes understandable, sometimes unforgivable, and the novel trusts the reader to sit with that discomfort rather than neatly resolving everything.
This isn’t a book I’d recommend to everyone. If you’re looking for another Carl and Donut-style adventure full of laughs and triumphant moments, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re prepared for an intense psychological horror story that uses its extreme premise to explore some surprisingly profound themes about humanity, it’s an incredibly memorable read.
It isn’t “Dungeon Crawler Carl with more gore.”
It’s a completely different story with completely different goals. Judging it by how closely it resembles Dungeon Crawler Carl means missing what makes it such a unique and unforgettable novel.

Insane...in a good way
Being a fan of DCC did NOT prepare me for the sheer insanity of this lol but Im happy I got to experience this version, as I hear the straight Audible version was no where near as good. The production was awesome (except for a few volume issues here and there), I loved the entire cast, and the story was bonkers in all the ways but what a satisfying ending. Well done!

i am new to audiobooks and i think i just ruined it for all other books. The storytelling is insane and well Jeff and the others did sutch a great job at not just telling the story, but pretty mutch showing it in my head. And Matt, your a mastermind.

Dark and Emotional
Ths SoundBooth Theater audio version, Jeff Hayes, and cast did not disappoint!
This LitRPG is body horror. It is very dark and very emotionally traumatizing with the delivery being a game about a war against demons attacking the world. The “surgeon” theme comes in as gamers must heal and eradicate infections/infestations within the Kaiju. The story is very character driven by exploring themes of captivity and torture. Despite the darkness and trauma of the story/game, it becomes a tale of processing emotional trauma and how the characters move past them. The premise behind and progression through the game are what drew me in initially but by the end I was invested in the story and characters due to their past and how they adapt to the trauma of the game. Exceptional story. Highly recommend.

Mixed Feelings
There were many similarities to DCC. A lot of the elements to the story again similar with just some variation to the details in DCC. Of course the performance was great. The production was good, i did enjoy it. This being my first experience with Soundbooth I for some reason had higher expectations that I felt weren’t completely met. The plot seemed a little contradictory with that twist in the end but I’m gonna say I enjoyed it with slight reservations.

Needs a Season 2
I am glad I invested in this story. Banksy had me in tears. I need to listen to that epilogue again because I am not sure what happened.
